Crochet Skill Level : Easy
Cheryl taught us this pattern stitch at our January BARC meeting and we all loved it. This is a great pattern for using up scraps. It’s a super easy pattern and suitable for beginners. Both sides of the afghan look exactly the same. If making a scrap afghan, change colors every 2 to 4 rows for a striped effect. Decide on a main color like white or black for example. Repeat this color every 6-8 rows for a coordinated effect on your scrap afghan. This would make a beautiful charity afghan. Of course, you can just use two or three colors or a variegated. I made up a little sample "Barbi Doll" afghan of 30 stitches so you could see what a whole afghan would look like.

MATERIALS
Worsted weight Yarn -Various colors, solids and variegated
H hook or hook of your choice
Gauge: I got about 30 sts or 10 shells = 11" with worsted weight and H hook
DIRECTIONS:
Ch a multiple of 3 stitches - until the chain measures the desired width of the afghan
Here are some suggestions:
For a Barbi Doll Quilt, Ch 30 VERY LOOSELY (this will produce an afghan about
11" wide)
For a Baby Afghan, Ch 96 VERY LOOSELY (this will produce an afghan about
35" wide)
For a Small Adult Afghan, Ch 126 VERY LOOSELY(this will produce an afghan
about 46" wide)
For a Medium Adult afghan, Ch 156 VERY LOOSELY (this will produce an afghan
about 57" wide)
Row 1: (Sc, 3dc) in third ch from hook - first shell made. *skip 2 chs, (sc,3dc) in next ch*. Repeat between * until 3 stitches from end, skip 2 sts, sc in last ch.
Row 2: Chain 2, turn, *(Sc, 3 dc) in first sc, *skip 3 dcs, (sc,3dc) in next sc*. Repeat between * until 4 stitches from end, skip last 3 dcs, sc in last st.
Repeat Row 2 until the afghan is the desired length.
BORDER
I used this simple single crochet border on the sample afghan. Have fun and experiment or use your own favorite border.
Rnd 1: With your designated main color, ch 1, turn, Sc in first sc (skip first dc, sc in next 2 dc, dc in next sc) repeat between parenthesis across the row until the last shell, Skip first dc, sc in next 2 dc, 3 sc in corner .
Working along the edge of the afghan, (loosely sc in side of next 4 rows, 2sc in next row) repeat between parenthesis along the edge making 3 sc in corner. "Fudge" more or less increases along edge to keep work flat or you may want to use a larger hook if the stitches are pulling too much.
Working along opposite side of ch, sc in other side of each Chain.
Working along the last edge of the afghan, (loosely sc in side of next 4 rows, 2sc in next row) repeat between parenthesis along the edge making 3 sc in last corner.
Rnd 2-3: Sc in each sc around making 3 sc in each corner.
Rnd 4: With a contrasting color, repeat Rnd 2 ending sl st in first sc.
Rnd 5: With the main color, repeat Rnd 2 ending sl st in first sc.
