TWO STRAND BRIM HAT



AS READ FROM A SAMPLE

Materials: 500 yards worsted weight wool or acrylic yarn. Ribbon to trim if desired.

                 Two threads are held together throughout. Directions are for the small size hat.

                 Hook: Size J (6 mm).

DIRECTIONS

Ch 5, join with a ss.

1: Ch 1, 9 sc in ring, join with a ss to top of ch 1.

2: Ch 1, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around. Join with a ss to top of ch 1: 15 sc counting the ch 1.

3: Ch 1, (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around, join with a ss to top of ch 1. This may not end evenly. No real problem.

4: Repeat row 3.

5: Repeat row 3.

6: Ch 3, dc in same st, (dc in next 4 sc, 2dc in next st) around. This may not work out evenly. Join with a ss to top of first ch 3.

7: Ch 1, (2 sc in next dc, sc in next 5 dc) around. Join with a ss to top of ch 1.

8: Repeat row 7.

9: Ch1 (2sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc) around. Join with as ss to top of ch 1.

10: (Decrease Row) Ch 3 (dc in next 5 sc, decrease 1dc) around. {to dec 1 dc: yo, insert hook in next st, yo , draw up a loop, yo and pull through two loops, yo and insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through two loops, yo and draw through all 3 loops} . This may end unevenly.

11: Ch 1, sc in each dc around. You should have about 64 stitches.

12: Repeat row 11.

13: Repeat row 11.

14: Ch 3, dc around: about 64 dc.

15: Ch 1, sc around.

16: Repeat row 15.

17: Repeat row 15. Continue repeating row 15 to increase depth of crown.

18: (Brim) Ch 3, (dc in next 4 sc, 2 dc in next sc) around.

19: Ch 1, (sc in next 6 dc, 2 sc in next dc) around.

20: Ch 1, (sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around.

21: Ch 3, (dc in next 4 sc, 2 dc in next sc) around.

22: Ch 1, (sc) around.

23: Repeat row 22.

24: Ch 1 (sc decrease around). {to make a sc decrease, insert the hook in the next stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through ONE loop, insert the hook in the next loop, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through ONE loop, yo and pull through all 3 loops}.

Turn the brim so that the decrease row is on top. Tack down the brim with a ss through the sc decrease row ( 24) and the tops of the dc row (18). Thread a ribbon or crochet chain through every fourth or fifth dc on row 14.

The hat size is controlled at row 10 by either adding (larger) or omitting (smaller) one or more rows of sc. Counts will be off. Who cares? Work as evenly as possible. Changing to sport weight yarn and using an F hook will also produce a smaller hat.

ELIZABETH’S BRIMMED HAT

DESCRIPTION: This pattern produces the same hat as the Two Strand pattern but the directions have been modified to use one strand of yarn to obtain the proper size.

Materials: 228 yards worsted weight wool or acrylic yarn. Ribbon to trim if desired.

Use size "G" hook for a stiffer hat. Use size H hook for a larger, softer hat.

Directions:

Ch 5, join with a ss.

1: Ch 1, 9 sc in ring, join with a ss to top of ch 1.

2: Ch 1, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around. Join with a ss to top of ch 1: 15 sc counting the ch 1.

3: Ch 1, (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around, join with a ss to top of ch 1. This may not end evenly. No real problem.

4: Repeat row 3.

5: Repeat row 3.

6: Ch 3, dc in same st, (dc in next 4 sc, 2dc in next st) around. This may not work out evenly. Join with a ss to top of first ch 3.

7: Ch 1, (2 sc in next dc, sc in next 3 dc) around. Join with a ss to top of ch 1.

8: Repeat row 7.

9: Ch1 (2sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc) around. Join with as ss to top of ch 1.

10: Ch 3 (dc in next 5 sc, decrease 1dc) around. {to dec 1 dc: yo, insert hook in next st, yo , draw up a loop, yo and pull through two loops, yo and insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through two loops, yo and draw through all 3 loops} . This may end unevenly.

11: Ch 1, sc in each dc around. You should have about 64 stitches.

14: Ch 3, dc around: about 64 dc.

15: Ch 1, sc around.

16: Repeat row 15.

18: Ch 3, dc around: about 64 dc, this is the ribbon row if you decide to use a ribbon.

19: Ch 1, sc around.

20: Repeat row 19.

21: Repeat row 19. Add extra rows here to make a deeper crown.

22: Ch 3, (dc in next 4 sc, 2 dc in next sc) around.

23: Ch 1, (sc in next 6 dc, 2 sc in next dc) around.

24: Ch 1, (sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around.

25: Ch 3, (dc in next 4 sc, 2 dc in next sc) around.

26: Ch 1, (sc) around.

27: Repeat row 24.

28: Repeat row 24.

29: Repeat row 24.

30: Repeat row 24.

31: Ch 1 (sc decrease around). {to make a sc decrease, insert the hook in the next stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through ONE loop, insert the hook in the next loop, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through ONE loop, yo and pull through all 3 loops}.

Turn the brim so that the decrease row is on top. Thread a ribbon through every fourth or fifth dc on row 18.

The hat size is controlled at row 9 by either adding (larger) or omitting (smaller) one or more rows of sc. Counts will be off. Who cares? Work as evenly as possible. Changing to sport weight yarn and using an F hook will also produce a smaller hat. Two strands of worsted weight yarn worked with a size I hook will produce a LARGE hat.
