I call this the "origami hot pad" because the unique fold in the work makes the flat pad. The entire pad is worked in rounds (about 18) in single crochet (sc). Made in a larger size this "pad" makes a fine pillow cover (chain enough to make a loose chain the length of the DIAGONAL of the pillow form).
Materials for a 7 X 7 inch pad: One ball of Sugar and Cream worsted weight cotton (about 120 yards).
Hook: Size H ( 5 mm) gives a medium density pad. A smaller hook (G) will give a higher density pad and take more yarn. A larger hook (I) will give a more open pad.
DIRECTIONS:
Chain 35.
Sc in the second chain from the hook. Sc in each chain to the end of the chain. Sc back to the beginning in the free loops of the beginning chain.
Sc in the top of the first sc and every following sc around until the work measures half as high as it is wide (about 18 rounds). Check that the edges meet properly using the "how to fold" diagram below. When a neat diagonal is attained, finish off the work leaving a tail about 24 inches long.
Whip stitch up along the diagonal to yield a flat, square double thickness pad. If making a pillow, insert the pillow form before starting the whip stitch.
